Officer, Three Others Held After Viral Video of Girl Allegedly Assaulted

A police officer stationed in Nakonde District has been arrested alongside three other women after a video allegedly showing the assault of a young woman went viral on social media.

The Zambia Police Service identified the officer as Diana Mukelebai, 40. Also arrested are Hudith Nangoi, 42, Mervis Nakamba, 26, and Lister Nachamba, 38. All four suspects are currently in police custody as investigations continue.

According to Police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi, the incident allegedly occurred between 11:00 and 12:00 hours on Monday, July 13, 2026, in the Mulenda area of Nakonde District. The matter was later reported to police on Wednesday at around 17:00 hours by a 23-year-old woman of Ntindi area.

The complainant alleged that she was assaulted with a stick and slapped by the four women, resulting in physical injuries. She further claimed that she was threatened during the incident and that the assault was recorded on video and later shared without her consent. The victim was issued with a medical report form and referred to Nakonde Urban Health Centre for medical examination and treatment.

The video, which has since circulated widely on social media, reportedly shows the victimβ€”who is alleged to be Ms. Mukelebai’s maidβ€”being whipped while pleading for forgiveness. Reports further allege that the assault followed accusations that the young woman had been found in bed with the police officer’s husband. These allegations remain part of the ongoing police investigation.

Mr. Chilabi said, in addition to aggravated assault, the suspects may also face charges under the Cyber Crimes Act No. 4 of 2025 for allegedly recording and distributing an explicit video without the victim’s consent. He emphasized that investigations are ongoing and that all circumstances surrounding the incident are being thoroughly examined.

The Zambia Police Service has reiterated its zero tolerance for Gender-Based Violence (GBV), stating that anyone found to have broken the law will be dealt with accordingly, regardless of their profession, social status, or background.
