President HH Honors Late Chief Mpezeni at Burial

Meta Description: Paramount Chief Mpezeni IV has been laid to rest in Chipata as President Hichilema praised his leadership and legacy.

Paramount Chief Mpezeni IV has been laid to rest at Ephendukeni Palace in Chipata District, bringing to an end a reign that spanned more than four decades.

Thousands of mourners gathered to pay their final respects to the revered traditional leader, whose influence extended beyond the Ngoni Kingdom and touched many parts of Zambia.

Speaking during the burial ceremony, President Hakainde Hichilema described the late chief as a patriot, unifier, and servant leader who dedicated his life to serving the people.

The President noted that despite carrying the responsibilities of a king, Chief Mpezeni remained humble and committed to promoting peace, cultural preservation, and national unity.

He further praised the late traditional leader for helping transform the Nc’wala Ceremony into an internationally recognized cultural event that continues to showcase Zambia’s rich heritage.

President Hichilema also emphasized the importance of honoring the deceased with dignity, adding that the same respect should be extended to Zambia’s Sixth Republican President, Edgar Lungu.

  • It’s clear from this piece that Chief Mpezeni IV’s influence went far beyond traditional leadership, especially in promoting unity and preserving culture through events like Nc’wala. I also find it meaningful that the President highlighted humility as part of his legacy—something often overlooked in leadership discussions. Moments like this really show how important traditional leaders remain in shaping national identity.
