OPP Running Mate Andyford Banda Steps Down
Andyford Banda Resigns as OPP Vice Presidential Pick
The Organized People’s Party (OPP) has announced that its vice-presidential running mate, Andyford Mayele Banda, has stepped down ahead of Zambia’s 2026 General Election.
In a statement issued by OPP presidential candidate Dr. Brian Mushimba, the party confirmed that it had accepted Banda’s decision and expressed gratitude for his dedication and contribution during their political journey. The party also wished him well in his future endeavors.
Following the resignation, the OPP said it has formally notified the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) and requested guidance on the legal process for replacing its vice-presidential candidate. The party stated that it will fully comply with all legal requirements and any directives issued by the Commission.
Despite the unexpected development, the OPP maintained that it remains united and committed to offering Zambians what it described as credible, practical, and principled leadership. The party emphasized that its vision and campaign promises remain unchanged as it continues preparations for the August 2026 General Election.
Dr. Mushimba further assured supporters and the public that a formal update will be issued once the Electoral Commission provides guidance on the next steps regarding the vacant running mate position.
