Andyford Banda Withdraws From OPP Ticket as Party Seeks ECZ Guidance

Organized People’s Party (OPP) has announced that Andyford Banda has stepped down as the party’s vice-presidential running mate ahead of the 2026 General Election.

The announcement was made by OPP presidential candidate Dr. Brian Mushimba, who said the party respects Banda’s decision and appreciates the commitment he showed during their political journey.

Banda Leaves OPP Running Mate Position

In an official statement, the OPP confirmed that Banda is no longer serving as the party’s vice-presidential running mate.

The party thanked him for his dedication to the shared political journey and wished him well following his decision to step away from the position.

The development comes as political parties continue preparations for the August 2026 General Election, with presidential candidates and their running mates forming an important part of the electoral process.

OPP Notifies Electoral Commission

Following Banda’s withdrawal, the OPP said it has officially notified the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) about the development.

The party has also requested guidance from the electoral body regarding the next legal steps that need to be followed.

According to the statement, the OPP intends to fully comply with the law and any directives issued by the Commission concerning the change to its presidential ticket.

The party has not yet announced who could replace Banda as the running mate or whether the ECZ will provide further clarification on the matter.

Party Says It Remains United

Despite the development, Mushimba said the OPP remains united and focused on its political objectives.

He said the party remains committed to offering Zambians what it describes as credible, practical and principled leadership.

The OPP also maintained that its vision and promises to the electorate remain unchanged despite the withdrawal of its running mate.

More Information Expected

The party said it will provide a formal update to the nation once it receives further guidance from the Electoral Commission.

The next steps could therefore depend on the response from the electoral authorities and the applicable legal requirements surrounding changes to a presidential ticket.

Banda’s decision follows a period of heightened political activity ahead of the August 13 election, with parties continuing to organise their campaigns and finalise their electoral strategies.

The OPP has urged its supporters to remain focused as the party awaits further direction from the ECZ.

For now, the party has thanked Andyford Banda for his contribution and confirmed that discussions regarding the next stage of the presidential ticket will proceed in accordance with the law.
