Basanga Secondary Gets Modern Science Laboratory

New Facility Set to Strengthen Practical Science Learning in Itezhi-Tezhi

Learners at Basanga Secondary School in Itezhi-Tezhi District have received a modern science laboratory aimed at improving practical learning and strengthening performance in science-related subjects.

The facility was handed over by Itezhi-Tezhi Power Corporation (ITPC) Board Chairperson Justin Loongo, who said the laboratory would provide learners with an opportunity to move beyond classroom theory and gain practical experience through experiments and scientific discovery.

Laboratory Described as a Game Changer

Speaking during the handover, Loongo said practical learning is an important component of science education because it enables learners to understand concepts by applying what they learn in the classroom.

The new laboratory is therefore expected to give pupils access to a more suitable environment for conducting experiments and developing practical scientific skills.

Itezhi-Tezhi District Commissioner Tobias Namantemba described the facility as a game changer for the school and the wider education sector in the district.

He said improved learning infrastructure can contribute to better educational conditions and give learners greater opportunities to develop their academic potential.

Facility Supports Competency-Based Curriculum

Meanwhile, District Education Board Secretary Maureen Shipota said the laboratory would support the implementation of Zambia’s 2023 Competency-Based Curriculum.

The curriculum places greater emphasis on practical skills, application of knowledge, problem-solving and preparing learners to use what they learn in real-life situations.

A functional science laboratory can therefore provide an important platform for learners to develop those skills through hands-on activities.

Learners Welcome the Development

The development has also been welcomed by learners at Basanga Secondary School.

Grade 12 learner Nancy Mutanti expressed excitement over the new facility, saying it had motivated her to work harder in science.

Mutanti also appealed to ITPC to consider supporting the school with a greenhouse that could be used for agriculture lessons.

The request reflects the learners’ desire for additional practical learning facilities that can complement classroom instruction.

Investment in Practical Education

The new laboratory represents an investment in improving access to practical science education at the secondary school level.

For learners preparing for examinations and considering careers in science, technology, engineering, medicine and other technical fields, access to appropriate laboratory facilities can provide valuable practical exposure.

The school and education authorities will now be expected to make effective use of the facility so that learners can benefit from the opportunities it provides.
