Nevers Mumba Says Elections Won’t Be Decided by Spirits

Former Vice President Dr. Nevers Mumba has urged political leaders to stop using the death of former President Edgar Lungu as a campaign tool, saying Zambia’s elections should be decided by the will of the people rather than superstition.

Speaking on the ongoing political debate surrounding the late former president, Dr. Mumba said Zambia is a Christian nation guided by the Bible and the Constitution, not by witchcraft or the spirits of the dead. He stressed that politicians should focus on presenting their policies and development plans instead of using Lungu’s passing to influence voters.

His remarks follow comments by National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) presidential candidate Brian Mundubile, who recently suggested that the late Edgar Lungu would only be buried after he wins this year’s presidential election.

Dr. Mumba said it had become increasingly clear that the former president’s death was being used to advance political agendas. While acknowledging that Lungu left behind an important political legacy, he emphasized that the late leader could no longer determine the country’s future.

He further warned against portraying Edgar Lungu’s spirit as capable of influencing the outcome of the elections, describing such narratives as promoting beliefs that have no place in a Christian nation. According to Dr. Mumba, Zambia should continue to place its trust in biblical values and constitutional principles rather than superstition.

The former vice president concluded by encouraging all presidential candidates to campaign on their ideas and explain how they intend to improve the lives of Zambians instead of relying on the name or legacy of a deceased leader.
