DJ Kandeke and Mafikizolo at Center of SA Tensions

Calls to temporarily stop booking South African artists are growing in parts of Southern Africa as anti-immigrant tensions in South Africa continue to spark concern across the region. In Zambia, media personality DJ Kandeke has urged local event promoters to suspend bookings of South African entertainers until the situation affecting foreign nationals improves.

Kandeke described the attacks as heartbreaking, saying no one deserves to lose their life in such circumstances. His remarks come amid increasing concern over reports of violence and intimidation targeting foreign nationals in parts of South Africa. The appeal has generated discussion among entertainment stakeholders, with some agreeing that the industry should show solidarity with those affected.

A similar debate has unfolded in neighboring Zimbabwe, where public pressure has intensified against the inclusion of South African artists at local events. The issue recently gained momentum after telecommunications company Econet Wireless Zimbabwe removed South African music duo Mafikizolo from the line-up for its upcoming Buddie Beatz Concert. Although the company has not publicly explained the decision, many believe it followed widespread calls from members of the public who argued that hosting South African performers was inappropriate while many Zimbabweans in South Africa continue to face uncertainty.

A revised promotional poster for the concert now features an all-Zimbabwean headline line-up, including Winky D, Killer T, and Flying Bantu, alongside DJs Sfiso, CeeJay, and Chiweddar. The change has been widely discussed on social media, where some users welcomed the decision while others questioned whether artists should be held responsible for broader political and social issues.

The developments come as reports suggest that bookings for some South African artists across parts of Africa have declined amid the ongoing anti-immigrant tensions. Critics have also expressed disappointment that several South African entertainers have remained silent on attacks targeting foreign nationals, while others argue that music should continue to unite people regardless of political or social disputes.

As discussions continue, the entertainment industry across the region finds itself navigating the complex intersection of culture, business, and public sentiment, with promoters, artists, and audiences closely watching how the situation develops in the coming weeks.
